Future Fictions Workshop

Studio Parsons & Charlesworth hosted a 2-part workshop with our graduate students. Tim Parsons and Jessica Charlesworth developed the Future Fiction workshop introducing worldbuilding and narrative-generation techniques as a means of uncovering ideas for practical regenerative design. By intentionally rejecting a problem-solving mode of design in favor of exploring the space of future imaginaries, this process uses narrative as a generative tool to open up new possibilities. Exceeding the limits of our current thinking and opening up futures and translating them back the reality and practice of today.

The Future Fictions workshop was followed up by ‘Artifact from the Future’ and invited students to bring their contexts and research into practice to start off this new season of developing their graduation work. Students had to bring their intentions, ethos and ideology through the design of an artifact.

Tim Parsons and Jessica Charlesworth are based in Chicago USA. Parsons & Charlesworth is an art and design studio that develops tangible worlds as discursive tools for critically appraising urgent issues. The studio’s investigative, research-driven, speculative approach uses installation, sculpture, designed objects, writing, photography and digital media to explore key social, ecological and technological challenges of our time, including climate change, the future of work, and the ethics of technology.
