’We come from cooperation, are cooperation, and can choose to co-create a thriving and regenerative future through cooperation.’
(Wahl, 2016)

MA Regenerative Design (MARD) is an online Master and part of Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London.

MARD is a two year, fully online Master in Regenerative Design supporting a diverse international community from different practices, ages and locations. We teach situated with focus on blended, collaborative and hybrid learning and are particularity suited for mature and mid-career practitioners. We recruit from all fields in the creative industries and those who have a ‘whole system’ attitude and aim to build place-based regenerative practices.

MARD investigates ecosystems, species and complexities in order to propose a new perspective on building a thriving more-than-human world. All supported by a wealth of expertise and lived experience from our students situated around the world, and informed by ecology, anthropology, design and living systems thinking.

MARD contributes to a world in which designers practice collectively within communities, making positive ecological and social change, acknowledging that we are part of a whole and living system. Through consciously connecting a new generation of regenerative practitioners into the ecosystems we are part of we are connecting practice, education and communities.

HOW DO WE LIVE TOGETHER AS ONE INTERDEPEND ECOSYSTEM?

In the context of a fast-accelerating climate and biodiversity emergency, sustainable design is not enough (Wahl). Over the past few decades, the integration of environmental considerations in the design process has focused on strategies such as more efficient use of natural resources or the reduction of our environmental impact. Regenerative Design goes beyond sustainability and actively contributes to restore and replenish what human activities have radically deteriorated.

Regenerative Design is a rising discipline that incorporates principles of deep ecology and living system thinking (Naess, Capra, Reed), regenerative cultures (Wahl), circular design (Webster), autonomous design (Escobar) and a fundamental understanding of planetary health to develop new creative propositions that can help restore our biodiversity, climate and empower communities through design. Regenerative design actively promotes a multi-species approach where human and non-human species co-habit holistically.

This course is build as an online community of int. designers, connecting ecosystems and cultures whilst developing a regenerative design practice and actively contribute to holistically restore their local biosphere taking into account endemic cultures, indigenous voices and socio-cultural tenets as appropriate. Fundamentally the course aims to enable students to adopt living systems principles for the development of holistic and regenerative design practices.

MARD staff connects design, ecology and anthropology and is supported by a wide living system network of practitioners, creative industry and researchers from around the world, contributing, challenging and informing our course.
